Projects and Initiatives of Casey Foundation Africa
Public Awareness Campaign (PAC) on Child Marriage & Adolescent Pregnancy
Our Public Awareness Campaign (PAC) creates advocacy messages highlighting how child marriage affects girls, the economic consequences of child marriage for the girls, families, communities, the nation, and the health risks of early pregnancy to initiate discussions on how to empower, protect, and keep girls in schools for a sustainable future.
We for Girls - Menstrual Health and Hygiene Education Campaign in Schools
Our campaign educates adolescent girls in rural communities about menstrual hygiene and the effective use and maintenance of reusable sanitary towels. We partner with secondary schools and engage teachers in promoting menstrual hygiene education. We also assist schools to establish health clubs for sustainable hygiene management. By focusing on secondary school girls, we create a solid foundation for lifelong menstrual health.
We for Women - Vocational Skills and Business Support
Our project contributes to the broader goal of eradicating child marriage and adolescent pregnancy as a poverty response. We identify the poorest households where young girls are at high risk and offer an entrepreneurship alternative. We train women from these households and equip them with knowledge and skills on how to start, manage, and sustain a business. Beneficiary women who cannot start their businesses without external support are identified and given one-time material assistance from the “Women Enterprise Fund.” Effort is made to promote environmentally sensitive and sustainable practices.
School Sponsorship
The School Sponsorship program identifies the most vulnerable girls and boys by accessing their backgrounds and supports them to complete a specific level of education (primary, secondary, or tertiary education) through the provision of school fees and/ or scholastic materials. Individuals and companies can pledge to sponsor a child or children to attain a certain level of education and contribute to their dreams, or alternatively donate financial or material support to this program. Keeping girls in school delays them from getting married while young.
Reusable Sanitary Towel Production Unit
The Casey Foundation Africa recognizes that there is a need for Girls and Women from the most vulnerable communities to have access to menstrual hygiene products at a lower cost to ensure they experience their menstrual period safely and healthily. The Casey Foundation Africa is establishing a Production Centre to manufacture affordable reusable sanitary towels that girls and women can access to combat menstrual period poverty.
Women Enterprise Fund
The “Women Enterprise Fund” supports the “We for Women Project” by providing material support to vulnerable women unable to fund the establishment of a business after successfully going through the “We for Women” training. We guide women to start a business based on their strengths and offer monitoring for at least 6 months to ensure sustainability.
